She'd stumbled over a rock or something and had fallen and couldn't get herself back up. When I aided her to her feet, she told me it was a test and offered me a brooch that looked like it was made out of pure ruby.
I politely declined. She was, after all, an old lady and while I wasn't no boy scout at 19, I couldn't just walk by hearing her pleading cries for help.
But she insisted.
Said to pin it on my mother's dress.
I asked why, but she wouldn't tell me. Cackled and said that all my dreams were about to come true.

But all the rest of the walk home, I couldn't shake the Gypsy's words from my mind. They clung like thick spider webs and wouldn't let go.
